Conveniently located right in the heart of the city, this gorgeous place makes for a popular quick getaway from city life, where visitors can cycle or walk along the various paths, that weave through a dense forest of pines and birch trees.

The paths around Öskjuhlíð join an extensive network of well-maintained footpaths in Reykjavík, leading through the scenic shores of Nauthólsvík and around the coastline to Seltjarnanes. Another option is to take the south-east trail to the recreational areas and valleys of Fossvogsdalur and Elliðaárdalur and on to the Heiðmörk nature reserve.

This church belongs to the Mosfell benefice of the Arnes deanery. It was built on the same spot as the ancient churches on a headland entering the western part of the artificial Lake Ulfljotsvatn in 1914. The relatively small wooden structure’s proportionally rather large steeple was added in 1924. The catholic churches were dedicated to Holy Mary mother of Christ and were annexed to the church in the parliamentary plains, Thingvellir. Now the church is served by the Reverend at Mosfell in the Grimsnes County

There are many beautiful places to stop and admire the scenery on these coastal paths, which are very popular with joggers and cyclists, however there is one well-photographed spot which has the added charm of being home to the striking Sólfar (Sun Voyager) – a massive steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Arnason which may resemble a Viking ship, but in fact, a dream boat and ode to the sun.

The epic view of Mount Esja, especially when it’s framed by the fiery edges of dawn and dusk, make this a favourite romantic destination for travellers and those with an appreciation of natural beauty.
