Photo: Leif Eriksson and the Hallgrimskirkja Church

The statue of Leif Eriksson is displayed in front of the Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavik situated on a high hill. The statue is a tribute to the explorer Leif Eriksson and his discovery of America. The Hallgrimskirkja is a functioning Lutheran church, as well as the largest church in Iceland, and stands 244 feet tall. It was named after poet and clergyman Hallgrimne Petursson, and built in expressionist architecture to express the lava flows in Iceland. It is a beautiful church inside and out. If you take the elevator to the tower you can view all of Reykjavik out of the windows in the tower. What a view! There is no fee to enter the church but a fee for going up the elevator to the observation deck, but well worth the cost.
