Photo: Northern Lights Reykjavik Old Harbour

It’s been called the most spectacular show on earth. I’m talking about the northern lights, or aurora borealis, those mysterious lights that dance across the night sky in the wintertime. With its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland is one of the best places on earth to witness this incredible phenomenon.

Largely a service harbour until recently, the Old Harbour has blossomed into a hot spot for tourists, with several museums, volcano and Northern Lights films, and excellent restaurants. Whale-watching and puffin-viewing trips depart from the pier. Photo ops abound with views of fishing boats, Harpa concert hall and snowcapped mountains beyond. On the western edge of the harbour, the Grandi area, named after the fish factory there, has burgeoned with eateries and shops as well.
